Ralph Sturman was born in March 1899 in Observatory Cape Town to Jessie and Edward Sturman. He completed his Matric at Rondebosch Boys High in 1916 and played first team rugby for the school. Lying about his age he immediately joined up to serve with the British forces in Europe. He saw active service until demobbed at the beginning of 1919. He held the rank of Captain and was missing in action at one stage for three weeks.

He completed his BSc at Cape Town University during which time he played he played under 21 Cricket and Rugby for Western Province. When he completed his studies he joined the South African Telecommunications Department. In 1923 he obtained a scholarship to study at the London Polytechnic where his brother Teddy went to study.
Teddy, having failed Matric in CapeTown, was placed at the Marconi school of Engineering at the London Polytechnic where he not only completed his Matric with Distinction but in an international Maths contest came 5th out of 2000 competitors.
Ralph then applied and was accepted to study for 2 years at Cambridge University doing a post graduate communications course. During his 2nd year he took Ancient Greek as an extra subject as he felt he needed further stimulation !!
