London and he also came out to South Africa at the time of the Anglo-Boer War.  He had a number of types of employment, being a secretary, a liquor salesman, a post office linesman and Chief Maintenance Officer at the G.P.O. in Rhodesia at different periods during his lifetime. Early on, about the time of their marriage, he worked under Arthur Squires on the Electricity Scheme for Northern Rhodesia.  He retired in 1931.
Doris wrote: 'Ruby was a person I enjoyed visiting.  She always made me laugh.  Going through her accounts she would look at one - ?yes, pay that one?, ?No, can't pay that one?, then this one ?bokis no chance?.  All sorts of other things, too'
John Liddell Adams married a second time, on 29th September 1923 in Bulawayo Eleanor Paradise who was born on 23rd November, 1875, in Bath, U.K. and she died in April 1960 in Battle, U.K. which is where he also died a couple of years later, on 10th August 1962.  There was no issue of this second marriage and, as the children of the Ruby were only about twelve, eleven and five years old respectively, they were largely brought up by and remembered their stepmother.
These three children were:
